The idea of equality that is in the American reputation didnt seem to apply to the Jim Crow South. Blacks, like Richard Wright were do by unfairly because of the color of their skin. If blacks challenged the norm they were treated with hatred and hostility. Punishments include arrests, beatings, even lynchings were a common quit of the age. Blacks during this period had to dealt with Jim Crow in different ways.

During Richard Wright era, blacks were considered second signifier and basically had no rights what so ever. One of Richard friends Griggs dealt with racism in his own unique way. Griggs dealt with it by changing his behavior by becoming submissive to whites. Some advice that Griggs gave to Richard was to, learn how to live in the South (217). He t gray him to get out of white hatfuls way and to not make them mad. Griggs main advice was to flake like a black boy is suppose to. He believed if he didnt angered whites they would leave him alone.

Another someone who had to deal with racism was the hotel maid at Richards old job at a hotel. She was walking out of the hotel with Richard and a white security guard grabbed her butt. Even though she knew except what happened, she just kept on walking. Richard asked her, How could you let him do that (234). She replied, It wear thint matter.



They do that all the time (234). The hotel maid had encountered this call out a lot so she was used to it, knowing if she r up she would be punished. Richard wanted to do something but she just told him, You woulda been a fool if you had done something (234). By this she meant to let whites do whatever they pleased.

Even at his graduation Richard faced racism. A few days before his graduation, his tenet called him into his office. Once he arrived the principle gave Richard a prepared speech. Richard was not very content about this and when he objected the principle gave and very racist answer.
